On Friday morning, June 20, the Louisiana House approved NRA-backed Senate Bill 51, sponsored by State Senator Joe McPherson (D-Woodworth), by a vote of 66-35. SB 51 affirms the rights of law-abiding Louisianans to transport and store firearms in their locked, private motor vehicles, and prohibits property owners, tenants, public or private employers, and businesses from infringing on this right in their parking areas. Late Friday afternoon, the Senate unanimously agreed to House amendments clarifying immunity and liability provisions for businesses.

A339 will do nothing to stop the criminal misuse of firearms but would criminalize the purchase of more than one handgun a month by law-abiding citizens who have already undergone extensive background checks and fingerprinting.
